Eva Beatrice Dykes, the first African-American woman to complete a doctorate degree, at Radcliffe in 1921.
After earning her bachelor’s degree from Howard University in 1914, Dykes went on to complete a second bachelor’s, a master’s degree, and eventually a doctorate at Radcliffe. Her dissertation, Pope and His Influence in America from 1715 to 1815, examined Alexander Pope’s opinions regarding slavery as well as his influence on American writers.
(Black Scholars Index)

Well, there seems to be some dispute as to her designation as “the first”.  There were two other African American women who received PhD’s in that year alone.  And, I believe there were others before the 20th century.
